At our January meeting, Paul presented our next challenge to make 12″x12″ block based on Elizabeth Hartman’s Mod Mosaic Floor pillow. Louise donated an amazing assortment of red, black and white fabrics, and Paul provided strips in Kona Snow. Paul put together a Mod Mosaic Flickr Gallery to give you some ideas. The completed blocks will be assembled into a guild quilt.

The Challenge:

Choose some of Louise’s red/black/tan fabric, take two Kona Snow sashing strips. Read through Elizabeth Hartman’s Mod Mosaic Floor Pillow instructions to get an idea of what we’ll be doing. Cut the red/black/tan fabric down into “scraps” (2 inch to 8 inch size) and use them to create a mosaic block about 12 inches by 12 inches (note: Although Paul showed us a pillow, we would like you to use the red/black/tan fabric to make a block, not a pillow). Add any fabric scraps that you have that fit into the red/black/tan colour scheme if you like. Make any leftovers into smaller units that can be used to make more blocks. You don’t have to be exact, just build them out to a rectangular-ish size. Don’t trim the edges, leave them jagged.

Please bring your completed blocks to the February 17th VMQG meeting. We’ll collect the large blocks and leftover-size blocks and will put them together into a quilt for the guild.

If you enjoy this technique, go ahead and make the pillow using your own colours to show off next time!

I finished my Mod Mosaic block today with a day to spare! I usually don’t start challenge blocks until the day of the meeting, so this is a huge step for me! Can’t wait to see everyone’s blocks tomorrow night!
