Kona Challenge
As you may have noticed if you follow some of the other Modern Quilt Guild blogs, there’s been a few that have done a Kona Solids challenge with charm Packs that Robert Kaufman donated.
We were also lucky recipients of this donation! We received 50 charms packs – one for each of our members. We all need to take great photos and document the project so we can report back to Robert Kaufman.
Here are the “official” challenge details:
Which charm pack did we get?
We really wanted to embrace the challenge, and we chose the darks. There’s 43 squares, and there are a great group f colours, you can see here.
How do I get my Charm Pack?
If you weren’t at the last meeting to pick yours up they are all at Heathers home. Contact her at the treasurers emails to arrange picking yours up.
Any packs not picked up by the April meeting, will be made into door prizes for any non members that are at that meeting, or to any new members.
What is the project deadline?
We wan you to be able to really take this project and run with it, so our deadline is the June 2011 meeting, which is also our anniversary meeting.
You’re free to complete and bring your quilt to an earlier meeting, but we would love all the quilts at the June meeting for group photos.
What kind of projects are we making?
Anything you want! Baby quilt, queen size quilt, wall hanging, table runner. It’s totally up to you.
How much other fabric can I use?
We decided not to put limits on this. Add as much yardage as you need to make the project you’re dreaming of.
In terms of numbers of other fabrics, there’s no limit, but keep them limited so that the charm packs stay the focus.
Do I have to use the whole charm pack?
Yes! You need to have every single square somewhere visible on your quilt – front, back, binding.
Can I add prints?
This is a cautious yes. It’s really important that our project focus on the wonderfulness of the Kona solids. Use prints with mindfulness.
Bottom line: Honour the spirit of the challenge – Keep the charm packs the focus.

And now for some inspirations:
1. Here’s a group on flickr that is just for the MQG Kona challenges.
2. Here’s a gallery Paul made in anticipation of this challenge.
3. Here’s another gallery I made the day the big box of fabric arrived at my office.
