The Door Jam Quilt Workshop with Barb Mortell

VMQG is excited to announce that Barb Mortell, a well-known local quilt  maker,  teacher and founder of ArtLeap, will  conduct a workshop for our Guild in early 2018.  Barb has exhibited internationally and has recently had her quilts published in books with Nancy Crow and Sherri Lynn Wood.  You can see some of her works here and here .  Barb will also give a trunk show at our December guild meeting so that you can see first hand some of Barb’s inspiring work.

A jam session is an event where a group of musicians get together to improvise new riffs on standard songs.   Each musician has skill on their chosen instrument, but to play well together, they must know know how to execute perfect scales in many keys. Given the right set of circumstances, the magic happens.

I call this quilt the Door Jam, because it started with a simple shape that looked like a door with a frame, or a jamb. As I was taking my dog for a walk through the neighbourhood we passed a simple grey house, with white trim and a yellow door. This sighting inspired the colour story. Jamming, or riffing on a single, simple shape, changing the scale and the proportions and the colours and value placements is much like musicians jamming together to make new and wonderful music.

In this workshop, we will take the basic shape of the framed door, and jam along with improvisational ideas. It’s a very simple idea, but one with many possibilities. Colour it simple, like I did, with varying shades of neutrals and a single colour., Try developing a larger colour story by framing multi coloured doors in black, or make rows in differing colour combos – it is limitless. I’ll show you a few different ideas to use the same shape in different ways, using multiple techniques to get the job done. We will discuss how to make an idea book for yourself to attain variety.

This lack of limit is what my workshops are about. I encourage each student to find a simple idea and follow it through to their own conclusion. In every workshop, the idea or impetus is just the starting point. We will talk and learn about colour theory, about value placement, about contrast and depth, scale and proportion. You will find your own composition while exploring and sharing ideas in the workshop.  Find your own approach, create your own work, share your vision, and learn the way to find your unique point of departure.
