October Feature! Living the Indigo Life: Ten Days in Japan with Jessica Wang!

Hello Everyone!

We are happy to announce our October feature for our guild meeting!  A lot of us have been very interested in all the lovely fabrics that Jessica has brought in using the indigo dying techniques!

Late last spring, VMQG member Jessica spent ten days in Fujino, Japan, where she studied indigo shibori dying at the workshop/farmhouse of silk and indigo farmer, weaver and dyer Bryan Whitehead.  Jessica will give a brief talk and slide show about her indigo adventure, the techniques she learned, and the joys of ten days of indigo-centred camaraderie with a like-minded group of textile fanatics.

This should be a fantastic feature!  I can’t wait!

Speed Date with Improv

We are excited to have Krista Hennebury (@poppyprint) back to teach Speed Date with Improv! She has had a busy year teaching across Canada and also made it down under to Australia to teach this class.

Think of this class as speed dating with improvisational piecing techniques that include curves and free-cutting without rulers.  It will be fast-paced and a lot of fun:  several techniques are introduced and demonstrated one after the other with very little time to second guess, stress or obsess over perfection. Every student will end up with a unique, original improv sampler quilt!  The focus here is to explore line, shape and happenstance in abstract design, so keep things simply graphic by using solid-coloured fabrics in black, white and one pop of colour.  In the afternoon, we’ll work together on the design wall to jigsaw the improv elements together, seeking balance and creative design opportunities.  Some pre-cutting is required.

When: Sunday, November 5, 2017

Where: Room C, Croatian Cultural Centre

Time: 10am-5pm

Cost: $55 for members, $60 for non-members, plus $2 handout fee.  Please note classes are non-refundable.  You are responsible for finding a replacement unless we have a waitlist.

Workshop is now full.

This is a quick reminder that our next meeting will be on Monday, June 19th, 2017!

It’s Anniversary Time!!!  We will have a super fun Icebreaker game this month. If any of you have come to one of the last retreats, we have a fantastic fabric strip game for everyone to enjoy!  Don’t worry, the rules are very simple and you will learn in a few seconds.  Just bring 10 strips at  2.5″ width of fabric to play in solid colors and/or low-volume prints!  If you have time, maybe bring a few extra if some people don’t have enough!

Be sure to bring extra yummy food stuffs as our break is usually a bit longer during this meeting so everyone can get to know each other!  Maybe talk about how you joined the guild!

We also want to try a little something new!  A sew-in from 12PM – 6PM on the day of the guild meeting at Michelle B’s condo room located at Knight and Kingsway! Get those projects finished up for Show & Tell!!  We all need a little extra time!
