VMQG June 19th, 2017 Meeting Reminder

Meeting Notes

This is a quick reminder that our next meeting will be on Monday, June 19th, 2017!

It’s Anniversary Time!!!  We will have a super fun Icebreaker game this month. If any of you have come to one of the last retreats, we have a fantastic fabric strip game for everyone to enjoy!  Don’t worry, the rules are very simple and you will learn in a few seconds.  Just bring 10 strips at  2.5″ width of fabric to play in solid colors and/or low-volume prints!  If you have time, maybe bring a few extra if some people don’t have enough!

Be sure to bring extra yummy food stuffs as our break is usually a bit longer during this meeting so everyone can get to know each other!  Maybe talk about how you joined the guild!

We also want to try a little something new!  A sew-in from 12PM – 6PM on the day of the guild meeting at Michelle B’s condo room located at Knight and Kingsway! Get those projects finished up for Show & Tell!!  We all need a little extra time!

Upcoming Community Events

1.) Patchwork Nation – Fraser Valley Quilt Guild Show, George Preston Recreation Centre, 20699 42 Ave, Langley, Friday June 23rd & 24th, 2017 10am to 5pm,  $7 Attendance fee, Gentleman Free!

2.) Our Social Fabric Sale!, Our Social Fabric, 340-1275 Venables Street, Vancouver, Sunday June 25th, 2017 10 am to 1 pm.  Arrive early, bring a bag, cash is faster!

3.) Sew-in at Dinkydoo Fabrics, Dinkydoo Fabrics Retail Store, Unit 108- 19141 Ford Road, Pitt Meadows, Friday July 21st, 5 pm to 11pm $10 Attendance Fee

VMQG Upcycle Challenge

Following Amanda Ward’s talk on quilting with repurposed materials, the guild’s next challenge is to “Upcycle”.

The Challenge: Make a quilted item using recycled material.

You won’t be using your own old stuff for this challenge – you’ll be getting some “new to you” old stuff.

Bring a gently used item to May’s meeting that can be upcycled. The item could be any fibre (including unknown), any colour, size, texture, etc. Think old clothes (t-shirts, ties, scarves, shirts, etc. ), linens, thrift store finds, fabric swatches, vinyl, canvas, leather, pleather, nylon – the weirder the better.

The item should be:
clean
in good condition (i.e. worth sewing)
capable of being sewn by a regular domestic sewing machine

Before coming to the meeting fold the item it up tightly and tie it with string or a fabric strip (i.e. so that no one can see what it is). You could bring it in a paper bag if you want but we were going for zero waste with this. Then at the break we’ll swap everyone who brought an item one can take one. Could be fun to see who can bring the most bizarre stuff.

The challenge then is to create a quilt, pouch, bag, mug rug, pin cushion, place mats or any other quilted item incorporating some of the item you picked up at the May meeting.

Deadline: Bring your completed challenge to the September VMQG Meeting for a special Show & Tell.

Hash tags: What’s a challenge without special hash tags? #VMQGUpcycleChallenge

With thanks to Sheri Lynn Wood for inspiring this challenge. Here is the link to her blog post that started this challenge idea. http://daintytime.net/2016/08/11/make-do-challenge/

VMQG January 16th 2017 Meeting Reminder!

Meeting Notes

This is a quick reminder that our next meeting will be on Monday, January 16th, 2017!

It’s a new year!!!  A big welcome to 2017!!!  This month we have a special guest speaker!  Judy Villett will be giving a talk and demo on “To Judge or Not to Judge.”  Some of the points she will be speaking on are:

  • Encourage participation in judged competitions
  • Demystify the judging process
  • Explain and demonstrate the judging procedures
  • And more!

Due to the speaking time, we will be having a shortened Show & Tell.  If you need to send off the project, please show!  If it can wait for another month, please show it at the February meeting!

Another reminder….DESTASH TIME!!!!  We will be having members sign up for a table for the March Destash!  Tables are $15 each, you can share a table if you want to.  It will be first come, first serve. So if you can’t make it to the meeting but really want a table for the destash, I would encourage you to find another member who can sign you up and provide the payment.  There are a limited amount of tables.

PLEASE REMEMBER – This is a destash. ie. Maybe you bought a little too much (we’ve all been there…) or some of that fabric isn’t really your taste anymore or you just know that the bears wearing gumboots half yard deserves a new home!  Everything on the table should be coming from your home, not resold goods. A destash, not a pop-up shop.

It’s your table, you can do what you wish with it.  However, there will not be tables provided for cutting, sorting, etc.  A good idea would be to possibly pre-sort your cuts and label with quarter yard, half yard, yard, etc.  There is limited space and we want to provide as many tables for members who want them.

AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST!  We have a last minute Sew-in!! Friday January 20th from 1PM – 11PM!  The December weather made it not so easy for some people to come to the last sew-in so Holly worked her magic and booked us for another date!!!  You can sign up at the meeting or use PayPal online for $10 or it’s $15 at the door!  Come on and get your sew on!

Upcoming VMQG Events
