Scattered blocks challenge

Apologies to the early birds for my delayed block challenge post. – Niki
Amy and Niki with blocks
This month’s block lottery is based on the Scattered Blocks tutorial that our quilty neighbour, Lisa in Seattle,WA, posted on her blog Shiner’s View back in January 2012. We don’t forget a good thing!
However, since we can never leave well enough alone: For the VMQG block challenge we are going with solid centers of your choice of colour and low volume backgrounds. Low volume being white or cream with a subtle pattern that reads from a distance as a neutral. The effect should be to give the finished top some texture and depth. As I was making my samples I found myself slipping into Cheryl Arkison’s improv slab technique, which I think will works well with Lisa’s scattered centers.
Scattered blocks challenge
Finished blocks should be trimmed to 5.5″ squares. They chain-piece like a dream so make lots to increase your chances of taking them all home at our September 15th meeting. One block = one ticket to win the lot!

PNW MQG Meetup Sunday schedule

PNW MQG

August 22-24, 2014 in Vancouver

The VMQG is thrilled to be hosting this year’s PNW MQG meetup! We’ve had a great time so far and are looking forward to one last day of fun!

SCHEDULE AND ACTIVITIES:

Sunday, August 24th

11am – 12:30pm Tour of Granville Island, Vancouver tourist hot spot and home of a variety of crafty stores. The Cloth Shop is one of Vancouver’s longest-running LQSs. The Netloft contains many interesting shops such as Maiwa Supply (where Jessica gets her indigo dyeing supplies!), Paper-Ya, and Beadworks. No meeting place to start, just arrive at your leisure and make your own way around Granville Island’s shops. We’re planning to meet around 12:30pm outside Roger’s Chocolates (between The Cloth Shop and the Granville Island Public Market) so we can travel to the Food Cart Fest together. One option is the Aquabus ferry in False Creek. The ferry travels from Granville Island to Spyglass Place, the closest dock to the Food Cart Fest. It’s cute and it has a rainbow on it!

aquabus

1pm – 3 pm – Food Cart fest for lunch/snacks. 215 West 1st Avenue (between the Cambie Street Bridge and the Olympic Village). The site is next to the Seawall and a short walk from the Canada Line’s Olympic Village Station, the Aquabus’ Spyglass Place Dock, and major bus routes along Broadway, Cambie, Main, and West 2nd Avenue. Admission is free for Modo and Vancity members, $2 for everyone else. Choose from over 20 food carts!

Transit info: when travelling from the Food Carts to Fabrics Etc, walk east on E 1st Ave four blocks to Main and E 1st (this route takes you past Mario’s Gelati). Catch the #19 bus eastbound (it runs every 12 minutes) and get off at the Kingsway and Gladstone stop (a 16 minute trip).

1pm – 4 pm – Fabrics Etc, a new fabric store at 2162 Kingsway, will be opening just for us! (just Southeast of Kingsway and Victoria Drive).

Transit info: To get from Fabrics Etc to Spool of Thread, hop back on the #19 bus, westbound this time, and backtrack to Kingsway and Fraser. This is a 10 minute trip.

konas at spool of thread

Spool of Thread’s Kona selection is second to none in Vancouver!

4pm – 6pm – visit Spool of Thread (649 E 15th Ave at Fraser St). Check out their modern quilting cottons and nearly the full range of Robert Kaufman’s Kona cottons! Spool of Thread can be tricky to find, and you should know that E 15th Ave is a one-way street (traffic flows west). Street parking on 15th is limited, so you can always look for a spot along Kingsway or around nearby Robson Park.  Spool of Thread’s Sunday hours are 12noon-6pm.

6:00pm – And that’s a wrap! Check back for more news about next year’s meetup in Seattle!

Note: We’re continuing one of the hashtags from last year’s event, so please tag your photos with #pnwmqgmeetup!

A Quick Dip: Introduction to Indigo Shibori Dyeing

Jessica with indigo-dyed cloth

As part of the PNW MQG meet-up, quilters are invited (weather permitting) to VMQG member Jessica W.’s backyard on Saturday, August 23 for a quick dip in the indigo vat!  Come over to learn about indigo and dye a piece of fabric (either a fat quarter, regular quarter yard, or fat eighth, depending on technique) with a given shibori method.  Jessica will lead two different sessions throughout the day, each focused on a particular set of shibori techniques.  If you haven’t tried indigo dyeing before, this short workshop will give you a feel for the dyeing process and a brief introduction to the wonderful world of indigo and shibori.

9:30-10:45 a.m. (or so): Arashi (pole wrapping) or tesuji (pleated and tied shibori)

5-6:30 p.m.: Stitched shibori techniques

Drop-ins are welcome, but space is limited to eight persons per session, and advance notice is preferred.  Jessica’s home is a ten-minute walk from the Broadway and Commercial Skytrain station and therefore easily accessible to those coming by public transportation (including to and from the Saturday meet-up venues downtown, as well as the meet-up hotel).

There is no fee, but a donation of $2-3 (in either USD or CAD) is suggested to cover the cost of supplies.

To sign up for a session, please email Jessica at momijistudio@gmail.com, and she will send you her address and additional information.  If you decide to come at the last minute, please call Jessica at home at 604-253-7431, and she will provide the address and directions.

Equipment list: If possible, please bring a pair of rubber kitchen gloves, a hat for protection from the sun, and a Ziploc bag to take your project home with you.  In addition, avoid wearing any clothing or shoes that you don’t want stained blue.  For the stitched shibori session, a basic sewing kit (especially a sharp needle with an eye large enough for perle cotton) and seam ripper would also be helpful.  If you are local and coming by car, it might not hurt for you to bring an outdoor chair as well.  All other supplies will be provided (including latex or vinyl gloves if you forget your kitchen gloves).

Utility Apron Swap at the PNW MQG Meetup

We’ve decided to do a brown-bag swap of utility / crafting aprons at the PNW MQG meetup happening in Vancouver this weekend. We announced this on our meetup page over a month ago, but thought we’d blog about it here as well in case anyone wanted to whip up a last-minute apron. You totally have time to do it!

The swapping will happen at the sew-out/potluck dinner at Trout Lake Park on Friday night to get the meetup started! This swap will be similar to the tote bag swap at the 2013 PNW MQG meetup that the Portland MQG hosted — you can make an apron and bring it to the meetup wrapped or in a brown bag. Make sure you enclose a card with contact info so your swap partner can thank you! Bring an apron / take an apron — a blind swap.  Participation is optional.

These will be small, waist-down only aprons meant to be worn while sewing or crafting. As they are a garment, you may want to consider pre-washing your fabric, but it’s not mandatory. We’ve created a Pinterest board with some ideas to inspire you!

August 18th meeting reminder

PNW MQG Meetup update – social mixer tickets on sale!

PNW MQG

August 22-24, 2014 in Vancouver

Edited 6:30pm, August 11th

The VMQG is thrilled to be hosting this year’s PNW MQG meetup! In just two weeks, members of modern quilt guilds from all over the Pacific Northwest will be visiting our beautiful city and we can’t wait to welcome you!

We’ve kept our plans for this event fairly casual so that you can choose your own adventure. Join up with the group for a sew-out at the park on Friday night, then spend Saturday exploring our city, and meet up again for a social mixer on Saturday night. It’s up to you!

NEW! Buy a ticket to the Social Mixer on Saturday night! Edit as of 6:30pm, Monday, August 11th: We are no longer selling tickets to this event as we won’t be able to meet our minimum. Stay tuned for possible alternate plans for Saturday night. We will be in touch with people who purchased tickets to refund your money.

Speaking of the social mixer, we need to have a minimum of sixty tickets sold so that we can go ahead with this event. We opened up ticket sales in person at the July VMQG meeting and also have a PayPal button on our website. If you’re planning on attending, please buy your ticket (see button below) by midnight on Monday, August 11th so we know we have enough interest. If the event is a go, we’ll continue to sell tickets over the next couple weeks, but don’t hesitate to buy yours asap!

The details: We will be hosting a social mixer from 6:00-9:00pm on Saturday, August 23rd at Rainier Provisions in Gastown. Rainier Provisions is located in a beautiful heritage building with 16 foot ceilings, big period windows, original tile and hardwood flooring, and its own bar and sound system. A variety of appetizers will be served. Cash bar. Tickets are $15.00 CDN and can be purchased on PayPal (use button below) or in person at a VMQG meeting. The venue can accommodate 110 people, so buy your ticket now and make sure you can join in the fun!

July 21st meeting reminder – see you at the park!

Our next meeting is 7:00pm, Monday, July 21st

VMQG meeting at Trout Lake Park
We look forward to seeing you on Monday for our guild meeting! We’ll be meeting at a different location than usual so we can enjoy the summer weather at Trout Lake Park. The forecast is showing a mix of sun and cloud and a high of 22C on Monday, so hopefully we’ll have a lovely evening at the park!

Inclement weather plan: If it should rain, we will meet in Room 112 at the Renfrew Community Centre at 2929 East 22nd Ave, Vancouver (where we had our March meeting). If the weather is looking iffy, watch your email and the blog. If we decide to change venues, we will let you know by 5pm on Monday.

We will be sharing our Michael Miller Petal Pinwheels Challenge projects at this meeting and we’d like to ask people who have already shared their completed projects to bring them back for a group photo. Since we expect lots of challenge participants, we’ll have limited time for our regular show and tell this month (however if you have something time-sensitive to share, for example, a UFO Challenge project that’s being given as a gift before our August meeting, bring it along and we’ll do our best to squeeze it in!). Members with completed challenge projects will each receive a ticket towards a random prize draw.

What: Vancouver Modern Quilt Guild Outdoor Meeting
