We are getting together for a free sew-in, in support of Berene Campbell’s (@happysewlucky) community project, the #torontoloveproject. The intent of the project is to bring a little hope and positivity to the city of Toronto, and in particular North York, in the wake of the recent tragic event there.

Please sign up at the next guild meeting which is Monday, May 21, 2018.  However, you do not need to be a member of the VMQG to attend.  Please email president@vancouvermodernquiltguild.ca if you would like to attend and cannot make the meeting.

Please refer to @happysewlucky’s blog post (link above) for the tutorial and details on the banners that we will be making and for ideas of what to make.  We will also be receiving some graciously donated fabric from Hyggeligt Fabrics.  http://www.hyggeligt.ca/    We will be receiving enough fabric to make approximately 10 banners.  Each banner is two sided and is 22 feet long which takes approximately 2 meters of fabric.

What to bring:
Sewing machine in good working order. (Remember your power cord)
– Sewing supplies – thread, scissors, pins, measuring tape etc.
– Cutting mat and rotary cutter
– Solid fabrics in jewel tones to supplement the donated fabric (refer to Berene’s blog post for requested colours).
– Any other special sewing supplies for your project (Paper piecing rulers, fusible web etc.)
– Empty toilet paper rolls (for rolling the finished banners for mailing to Toronto).
– Snacks and nibbles
Irons, ironing boards and extension cords will be provided.

Any banners finished at the sew-in (or finished and brought to the sew-in) will be mailed together to Toronto.

Come and have a fun day!!  I am hoping we have a great turnout for such a fabulous project.

TORONTO LOVE PROJECT

Our friend and VMQG (and Toronto MQG) member, Berene Campbell, is spear-heading a community collaborative project in response to the tragedy in Toronto a few weeks back.  She is calling it the “TORONTO LOVE PROJECT”.

You can find Berene here: (Website: http://happysewlucky.com/) and on IG @happysewlucky

You may remember Berene (with the help of Amy Friend) organized a wonderful community project after the bombing in Boston which she called “To Boston with Love”. https://happysewlucky.wordpress.com/2013/05/07/all-together-now-yay/

If you would like to participate in the “TORONTO LOVE PROJECT” you can find all of the details on her blog here at:  (#torontoloveproject)

VMQG will likely be organizing a sew-in in support of this collaboration in the next few weeks.  Watch this space for details.

June Meeting with Stacey Day – Early Reminder

I wanted to give all members early notification about our June program.  Our former member and Executive member, Stacey Day, has recently launched a fabulous new book, Child’s Play Quilts. (She is still a member of the MQG and FVMQG but moved too far away to attend our meetings on a regular basis with all she has going on).

Stacey has been published in many magazines, including American Quilter, McCall’s Quilting, Modern Quilts Unlimited and Quiltcon Magazine.  She will also be lecturing and teaching at Quilt Canada in Vancouver in May.  Stacey also designs quilts for Tula Pink and will be teaching alongside Tula on a quilting cruise this August.  You may or may not know that Stacey designed this quilt…. Wow!!

We are pleased that Stacey will be our guest speaker at our June meeting and will be doing a trunk show for us.  If you had planned to buy her book, perhaps wait until June and buy it directly from her as she will be bringing copies to our meeting.  If you have already purchased it, I am sure she will be happy to sign it for you at the meeting.

In the meantime, you can visit her at https://staceyinstitches.com/

We are looking forward to hosting you Stacey.

Update: Stacey tells me that she will be charging $30 cash for the book.  She also accepts Square but they will be $31.50 if you pay by Square.

Quilt Canada is in Vancouver this year and it is fast approaching – You can get involved!!

Quilt Canada is being held in the Vancouver this year.  Pretty exciting!!  It is being held May 31, June 1 and June 2, 2018 at the Vancouver Convention Centre.
May 31 – 9:30am – 6pm
June 1 – 9:30am – 6pm
June 2 – 9:30am – 4pm

There are several ways you will be able to get involved.

CQA will need a lot of volunteers to host such a large show.  A volunteer application form is available on the event website below:

https://canadianquilter.com/quilt-canada-2018-2/

Also prior to the Quilt Canada, the CQA is holding a focus group which will assist them in setting the future direction of the organization.  Please consider taking part in this important event.

The Quilts of Valour organization is also looking for volunteers to assist in their booth at Quilt Canada.  Please contact Lezley Zwaal for details.

lezley.zwaal@quiltsofvalour.ca
Founder@QuiltsOfValour.ca
www.quiltsofvalour.ca

Finally, the Vancouver Modern Quilt Guild has been asked to host the Modern Quilt Guild Quiltcon Travelling Quilt Exhibition which is being held as part of Quilt Canada 2018.  We will be asking for volunteers to assist us with hanging the show, take-down as well as being available at the event to represent modern quilting and the Quiltcon quilts to all of the Quilt Canada attendees.

Below is the Best in Show quilt from Quiltcon 2018 which is wrapping up today.  “Going Up” by Stephanie Skardal from Clemmons, NC.  It is very likely that this quilt will be at Quilt Canada.  I can’t wait to see it in person.

We will let you know about these volunteer opportunities at an upcoming VMQG meeting and watch this space as well!!

Thanks and looking forward to seeing you at the show.
