Another month of exploring shapes and we are back to squares. This time it’s the simple four patch, what could be considered the basic b*tch of patchwork. Or, does it have more creative potential?
Colour can lift this simple block a strikingly modern level. Leave safe ideas of colour pairings behind as this month’s block lotto challenge is for you play with combinations of solid colours in cool-warm, dark-medium-light. Make each quarter a different colour.
Use 4.5″ squares for your four-patches. This tutorial by Maria Gee of Swallowtail Quilting is excellent – plus she includes a downloadable colouring sheet and I especially appreciated the little bit at the end about tweaking the seams for a flatter join: https://scissortailquilting.com/quilt-block-library/4-patch-unit/
For every four-patch block that you bring to the September guild meeting, you get a ticket to win them all. These are fun and easy and worth a rummage through your solids for.
