Monday, March 16th Meeting – CANCELLED

No doubt like you, the Executive have been monitoring efforts to respond and control the spread of COVID-19. The COVID-19 situation is evolving rapidly, and our members health and safety is our priority.  In this context, the Executive of the Vancouver Modern Quilt Guild has made the difficult decision to cancel our March meeting.  I know it’s a stressful situation we find ourselves in.  The most important thing we can do is to stay calm.  And there is nothing quite like a little sewing that helps us calm our worried minds – right?

We do have lots of news to share, and will do so via email and social media.

  • Hold onto the block lotto blocks you’ve made, we’ll draw for them at our next meeting.  And the next block lotto will be going up on the blog – watch for it!
  • Niki will send a note out to the Robins.  Initial thoughts are you can hold onto the project you have for another month.
  • There will be a mini challenge announcement coming soon, and we’ll have bundles for sale.  We are looking to set up a few pick-up locations for the bundles.  Stay tuned for more information.
  • Edenvale remains open, and the retreat is still a go.  There is one spot left if you’d like to join the weekend of sewing.  Elisabeth will keep retreater’s informed if anything changes.

As for the next meeting in April, we’ll keep monitoring the situation and keep you informed.

Thank you for your understanding.

Monday, February 17th Meeting Reminder

Program: February’s program will feature a presentation on colour from local fibre artist, Barbara Shelly. Barbara will provide a brief introduction to colour theory and then help us begin to put this lesson into practice by discussing the use of colour in a few sample quilts brought in by VMQG members.

Here is a bit more about Barbara:

From her studio overlooking Indian Arm, artist Barbara Shelly creates sculptured tapestries and art quilts. Her work is exhibited in international galleries and commissioned for private collections.

She has created over 50 public works of art in the past 25 years, including the Vancouver Street Banners, the West Concourse of Canada Pavilion for EXPO 86, the lobbies of the latest Hilton Hotel and downtown YWCA. In 1991 she created the monumental set of 30′ banners for the Canadian Chancery in Washington, DC.

Following a distinguished teaching career at UBC and Langara College, Barbara Shelly chairs the Advisory Board for the Textile Arts Program at Capilano College, and the Vancouver Street Banner Committee. She also teaches specialty courses, including MISSA (Metchosin International Summer School of the Arts).

We will be bringing the love to the February meeting with our feature speaker, Lorna Shapiro of Quilters Dream Fabrics:

VMQG member Lorna Shapiro came to quilting with a very left-brain focus after a 35-year career in IT and management. Lorna didn’t like following other people’s patterns and started almost immediately making her own designs. These early quilts, lacking an aesthetic that pleased her, prompted her to start researching what artists and designers knew that she didn’t. Lorna will discuss what makes a compelling and cohesive design, and also describe some of the variables that will help you identify the characteristics of your personal aesthetic. There will be lots of quilt photos so that the principles Lorna discusses become tangible and easy to recall.
