June Meeting Recap – Our THIRD Anniversary

Can you believe it was only three short years ago that the first meeting of the VMQG happened? Over 40 people showed up that evening, and the energy and excitement in the room were palpable.

The enthusiasm and creativity of our members and guests certainly haven’t waned. We’ve grown, our families have grown, we’ve learned, we’ve been inspired and we’ve inspired each other. It’s been a blast! And we celebrated in style at our anniversary meeting with a full house.

Full house at the VMQG's third anniversary meeting

As always, more photos in the Flickr group. To highlight, though, there were quilts both large and small.

We had custom cupcakes and lots of fabulous door prizes too. Happy Anniversary to us!

May Meeting Recap

We broke our own attendance records at the May Meeting! 50 people attended! Woo hoo! And we’re up to a total of 70 members – yay us!

The backdrop for the meeting was our wonderful hexie challenge blocks. Don’t they look marvelous?

P1000956

Three lucky members got to split the 102 blocks – Felicity (using up her ‘real’ lottery luck again), Jo Ann and Niki.

There was a wonderful round up of the To Boston With Love flags and Berene was there in person to pick them up before her flight to Boston the next day.

We announced some exciting workshop news: we’ve partnered with the Fraser Valley MQG to bring Cheryl Arkison to BC for Workshops and a trunk show in July (18th trunk show in Vancouver, 19th and 20th workshops in Abbotsford – more details to come in their own blog post).

And we saw some beautiful quilts. More in the Flickr group, as usual.

Be on the lookout for a call for quilts to be entered in the VMQG showcase at the Northwest Quilting Expo in Portland, OR in September. Members, you are encouraged to enter a modern quilt you’re most proud of to be featured in the show. Our quilts will be in a separate exhibit and don’t need to be juried in.

Thanks for coming out to the meeting, and see you in June!

May 20th Meeting Reminder

Our next meeting is 7:00pm, Monday, May 20th.

We look forward to seeing you at the Oakridge Seniors’ Centre on Monday night! Yes, we are having a meeting on Victoria Day! We can’t wait to see all the beautiful flags you’ve made for “To Boston With Love”! This is our last guild meeting before Maker Faire, so we’ll be collecting quilts for our booth.

To Boston With Love
If you’ve seen our blog lately, you know that VMQG member Berene Campbell is the creative spark behind “To Boston With Love“, a collaborative effort of makers to bring peace and love from far and wide to the people of Boston. Hundreds of people all over the world have been working to create peace and love flags that will hang in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston from May 25th through July 7th. Please bring your flags to tonight’s meeting!

Vancouver Mini Maker Faire
Vancouver Mini Maker Faire
For the third year running, the VMQG will have a booth at Maker Faire. This year, the show is on Saturday, June 1st and Sunday, June 2nd and we’re still looking for volunteers for our booth. We need people who can demonstrate quilting on a sewing machine, chat with booth visitors about the guild, and run an interactive fabric design activity involving crayons and fabric. Please sign up at the meeting or contact Elsie Sands (esands@shaw.ca) to volunteer.

We need your quilts! If any of you have modern quilts (techie themed or otherwise) that you could let us use for the booth at VMMF,  please bring them to the meeting this evening. We are interested in having quilts at all stages of completion, so visitors to the Faire can get an idea what the stages of making a quilt look like.  Please volunteer your quilts ONLY if you are comfortable with people touching them.  Please try to make sure they have labels with your name on them.

If any of you have regular wax crayons at your house that you’re done with and willing to donate to our booth at Maker Faire, please bring them. We’ll use them for our hands-on modern fabric design project. Thanks!

January Meeting Recap

January’s meeting was our first in the new venue, Oakridge Seniors Centre. We’ve had great feedback about the new space – including how the small tables create a space that is very conducive to chatting, not to mention that they’re great for working on small projects during the meeting!

December Meeting Recap

Wow! What a way to close out 2012!

Right off the bat, we exchanged Scrap Bag Challenge/Swap items. This activity was very well received – several members said they’d love to do this again, and I totally get why! The variety of “makes” was incredible!

Scrap Bag Challenge goodies

There were pin cushions, thread catchers, fabric boxes, name tags, a quilt top, a finished wallhanging (!!), a sewing machine cover, pouches, notebook covers, a Christmas stocking, mini quilts and more…So fun!

Scrap Bag group

We also received our pincushions from the pincushion swap – what an incredibly fast turnaround. We delivered at the November meeting and received our pincushions in December! Special thanks to Arita for driving across the border to pick up the package!

Beautiful pincushions!

Again, the variety and creativity were off the scales.

Happy pincushion swappers

Another really exciting event was the unveiling of the quilt top made with the QuiltCon Challenge Blocks. Didn’t Paul do a wonderful job?
