February 15th Meeting Reminder!

This is a quick reminder that our next meeting will be on Monday, February 15th, 2016!

It’s February already!  This month, the VMQG is happy to have a presentation from our very own guild member Elke!  Elke’s husband is an architectural photographer who was shooting a house for an architect for an article in Gray magazine and borrowed some quilts from members of our guild.  And now we can see the result!  So exciting!

For this month’s Show & Tell, we would like to do a little feature, the QuiltCon Rejects!  Bring your quilts and give us a little story about them!  After this we will continue with regular Show & Tell.  Bring all your goodies to show us!

January 18th Meeting Reminder

Meeting Notes

This is a quick reminder that our next meeting will be on the fourth Monday of the month, Monday, January 18th, 2016!

Welcome to 2016!!  I hope everyone enjoyed their last days of 2015 and are ready to start a new year of quilting!!!  This month we have a special guest speaker who is a great inspiration to our lovely little guild.  Our very own Paul Krampitz!  Yes!  You may think he is just a great quilt holder but no no!!  Paul has been the mastermind of many of the quilt challenges over the years, he has lead workshops and helped out at many quilting events.

As Paul has been quilting for many years and accumulated a number gorgeous quilts to show us, we will be having a shortened Show & Tell this month.  If there is anything that you need to send off to family or friends, be sure to sign up first!  If your projects are under no time constraint, please still sign up on the list, however there may not be enough time during this meeting.  We want to make sure Paul can show us everything and answer all our questions!

Fancy Fox II class in January!

fancy fox 4
Fancy Fox II quilt block by Stacey Murton

VMQG’s own Jade Prosser (@stitchmischief on instagram) will be running a workshop to make Fancy Fox II, the large version of Elizabeth Hartman’s pattern, and we need more people to make sure the workshop happens!

Trying to think of a holiday gift that’s not STUFF? What about spending a day together sewing? This wonderful pattern is perfect for newer quilters, or a parent/child experience! It’s not a quilting 101 class, so basic knowledge is required, but it’s a funky pattern for all ages, and Jade is really excited about the possibility of working with teen sewers!

(not sure your giftee is old enough? email amy@vancouvermodernquiltguild.ca and we can chat about it!)

For more experienced quilters, the pattern goes together really quickly and given its large scale, you should have a quilt top by the end of the day. Come and join us!

Fox_Projects

We’ve rescheduled this class to January, and switched it to a Saturday after feedback from members that they’d like more Saturday workshops.

Date: Saturday January 30th, 2015

Time: 10 am to 4 pm

Location: Room C, Croatian Cultural Centre, 3250 Commercial Dr, Vancouver

Cost: $50 (members)/$55 (non-members).

Includes pattern, which retails for $15.

Modern Mini Showcase at Vancouver Quilters’ Guild Show

Have you heard? Vancouver Modern Quilt Guild is the featured artist at the upcoming Vancouver Quilters’ Guild show on October 23rd and 24th at St. Mary’s Ukranian Hall, 550 West 14th Av (near Cambie) Vancouver!

Our amazing members responded to the challenge and created a beautiful collection of mini quilts that illustrate the characteristics of modern quilting. Our Modern Mini Showcase features the work of our talented members. And they’re just one part of a larger show that is sure to be wonderful!

Felicity’s Modern Pods

Come and see us, won’t you? Find the details here on the Vancouver Quilters’ Guild website.

Scrap Swap Challenge!

Rather than the holiday ornament swap that we’ve done at our December meeting for the past few years, we’re going back to the highly popular scrap swap  – and making it a challenge as well!

scrap swap

(all of the goodies swapped in 2012!)

How it works:

– Everyone who brings a bag of scraps will take a bag of scraps and use it to make a gift for their partner.

– Gifts should be something smallish, like a zippered pouch, simple tote, mug rug, potholder, notebook cover, pincushion, etc.

– Bring the finished items back to the December meeting, along with any leftover scraps.

And the challenge part of it?

– The only fabric you can add to the scraps you receive is SOLIDS, and the finished item must incorporate FLYING GEESE in some way.

If you’d like to participate, please bring a scrap bag containing AT LEAST 2 fqs worth of fabric to the October meeting. Pick your favourite fabrics (including prints), because you’ll be getting it back, all sewn up into something just for you! When you get to the meeting, Amy will give you a very short little questionnaire to fill out and tuck inside your bag. Make sure your name isn’t visible, because this will be a secret swap!

We Want To Know What You Think!!

The current executive has put together a survey, and we’re looking for your opinions!

VMQG 2015 SURVEY

The survey asks about your experiences with VMQG, with the MQG, and with quilting in general. We’ll share some of the results here on our blog, and use other results to help us plan future programming and events.

It should take you about 15-20 minutes, but they’re almost all easy multiple choice answers. All of the questions are optional, and you can answer anonymously if you’d like – but you won’t be entered to win a prize if you don’t give us your email address!

The survey will be open from now until Sept 30th and we’ll draw a winner from all of the people who participated at our October meeting.

If you have any questions about the survey, feel free to email amy AT vancouvermodernquiltguild DOT ca.

Friday night sew-ins October 2nd & November 20th

Our August sew-in 28th was the busiest yet and we’re back by popular demand! We’ve got some fall sew-ins booked and we’d love for you to join us on Friday, October 2nd and/or Friday, November 20th from 6:00-11:00pm at Holy Trinity Anglican Church (details below). The October sew-in is two weeks before our retreat, and it’s a great chance to baste quilts that you want to quilt on retreat! The November sew-in will be a last-chance to finish quilts for submission to the QuiltCon quilt show as well as a good time to work on holiday projects.
