This month we are minding our Ps & Qs, and any other letter that strikes our fancy. Taking our leads from Tonya Ricucci, author of Word Play Quilts (Martingale & Company, 2010) and Lynne Tyler, author of the blog Patchery Menagerie, and whose quilt is featured on page 50 of Word Play Quilts. Lynne also created the Red Letter Alphabet quilt-a-long with her own spin on constructing letter blocks.Â

This style of lettering gets it’s wonky modern look from not following a pattern exactly. I found that it feels like guided improv. I only used my ruler for squaring up as I sewed fabric directly from my bag of scrappy strips. If you are not a hoarder like me, Tonya recommends cutting your strips between 1″ and 2″, or up to 3″ for maximum drama.
Instructions:
- Pick your letter(s);
- Use solids on white, and have a lot of fabric handy;
- Make your letters 5″ high (width will vary);
- Leave your letters in single units so that the block lotto winner can play author;
