This month we are going to soften the pointy-points with some rounded edges, be they full circles or quarter circles pieced together. We have done a couple of block lotto challenges recently that link to tutorials (see January & April 2019). However, do what you want to do: go improv, or paper-pieced, or whatever your partner’s top calls for.

Kindly do two of the four sides with some sort of circle or curved blocks, and the other two sides in something that will create some negative space. In other words, some breathing room that will allow the blocks to pop.

Negative space is often a solid fabric but can also be a print that reads as tonally one colour, like low-volume prints do. Negative space is a frequently used composition device in modern quilting that can create the illusion of movement.
