RR January – Rail Fence

Hi Robins,

Hope you are feeling some renewed energy with 2021 ahead of us – together let’s make some cute modern medallion quilts with each month bringing us closer to a completed top.

We are going  to started with something simple but fun – rail fence blocks. The lines will direct the eye, so consider the direction you place them in. Surround your center with these stripey blocks – scale is up to you.  You can Google instructions, but rail fence blocks are as straight-forward as piecing three strips of the same-size fabric together and then trimming.

Erin Burke Harris in her book Make Your Own Medallion (Lucky Spool Media, 2017) gives the sensible advice to strip long pieces and then cut the blocks. The width won’t change but to calculate the length to fit your top, she directs us to multiply the number of blocks by the length of the unfinished unit + 1″ to allow for trimming.

Remember to tag your progress as #vanmqgrr21.
