This month’s block lotto will be solid fabrics in Scandinavian colours, using the MQG block ‘Lockup’ by Riane Menardi Morrison. It is a quick and easy block to make and embraces the modern quilt ideas of minimalism and negative space. It’s twice as long as it is wide and will make different patterns depending on how the blocks are put together.  More info is on the MQG site on turning the block into a small quilt, but all the instructions you need for making a block lotto block are below.

Fabrics – Any solid cotton, linen or linen blends

    • Neutral background fabrics:  soft greys/taupes/cream (not white)
    • Coloured stripe fabrics:  pastel or greyed down pinks/blues/yellows/greens
    • Colour inspiration:

block size 8.5” X 4.5”

Cutting:

For the neutral background fabric, cut:

[2] 1” x 4-1/2” rectangles
[1] 1-1/2” x 4-1/2″ rectangle
[1] 3-1/2” x 4-1/2” rectangle

For the coloured stripe fabric, cut:
[3] 1-1/2” x 4-1/2″ rectangles

Assembly:

Take your stripe colour and the two 1″ background strips, and arrange them as shown. Matching right sides together, sew these strips together to make the middle section of your block. Don’t press your seams yet, but wait to press all seams to the same side once the block is complete.

Sew the 1-1/2” background rectangle to the left side of your centre unit, and the 3-1/2” background rectangle to the right side of your block. Press all your seams to the same side of your block to finish.  The block will measure 8-1/2” x 4-1/2”.
