Puzzle Patch Block Study
This month we are using a MQG pattern by Vasudha Govindan. The block on the original pattern is 12″x12″ however, I have reduced the block to 6 1/2″x 6 1/2″ so please follow the following cutting measurements outlined below.
If you wish to read about the variations on the arrangements of the block or download the original pattern pdf, log into the MQG website: Resource Library, under ‘Categories’ select Quilt Block studies then under ‘Type’ choose Patterns. Fabric Requirement
• 4 solids in the yellow/orange/pink/red/purple spectrum of the colour wheel.
• Fabric values should be from light to dark.

Cutting Instructions
1. To make one block cut the following:
• Fabric A (Dark): 5″ x 5″ square
• Fabric B (Medium Dark): 5″ x 5″ square
• Fabric C (Medium): 5″ x 5″ square
• Fabric D (Light): (2) 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ squares.
2. From Fabric A and B: Cut the 5″ x 5″ square in half once along the diagonal.
3. From Fabric C: Cut the 5″ x 5″ square into two 5″ x 2 1/2″ rectangles.

Sewing Instructions
• Sew each Fabric D square to a Fabric C 5” x 2 /1/2” rectangle.
• Sew one C-D unit to the base of a Fabric A triangle, and sew the second C-D unit to the base of a Fabric B triangle.
• Use a long ruler with a 45º marking line to trim. Line up the edge of the ruler along the edge of the Fabric B triangle and line up the 45º line with the seam between the B triangle and the C-D unit. Cut along the edge of B and through the C rectangle to make a nice large triangle.
• Repeat for the other unit with the Fabric A triangle.
• Join the two large triangles along the slanted edge. Though there are no points to match for this seam, it is good to use a few pins to sew this seam because you will be sewing along the bias of the fabric. Use a pin at each end, and about three or four in the middle. Press seam open.
Tip: To press open, place the block wrong sides up, gently pry the seam open with your fingers and place a hot iron. Simply lift up the iron move it to another section if needed. Use a lift and drop motion instead of moving it back and forth.
• Trim the block to 6 1/2” x 61/2”, lining up the long seam with the 45º marking line on your ruler.
Note: You will have one triangle of Fabric A and one triangle of Fabric B left over, which you can use in another block.
