Fabric Bat fabric — 2 different values of the same coloured fabric. A. One dark value of solid or reads as solid print. B. One medium value of solid or reads as solid print. Background fabric — contrasting coloured fabric in solid or a low-volume print.
Cutting Bat fabric A: 6″ x 6″ square 3″ x 3″ square Bat fabric B: 2 – 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ squares Background fabric: 6″ x 6″ square 3″ x 3″ square 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ square 1 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangle 1 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ rectangle 3 1/2” x 2 1/2” rectangle 3 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ rectangle
Instructions Assemble the HST’s 1. Pair the bat fabric A and the Background 6″ squares right sides together. 2. On the wrong side of the background fabric mark a diagonal line from corner to corner. 3. Sew 1/4″ line on either side of the line. 4. Cut along the line. This will give you two 5 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ HSTs. 5. Press. 6. Repeat steps 1 – 5 with the 3″ square of the same colour (A) and the background fabric. This will give you two 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ HSTs.
Assemble the block 1. Pair one bat fabric A 2 1/2″ HST with one bat fabric B 2 1/2″ square. Stitch and press.
2. Pair one bat fabric A 2 1/2″ HST with a background fabric 2 1/2″ square. Stitch and press.
3. Attach unit from Step 1 to the unit from Step 2 to make the bat’s head.
4. Attach the 1 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ background fabric rectangle to the top of the Step 3 block. Press. Attach the 1 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ background fabric rectangle to the left side of the block.
5. Attach unit from Step 4 with the one of the 5 1/2″ HST to form one wing.
6. Attach a fabric B square with the background 3 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ rectangle.
7. Attach the unit from Step 6 with the background 3 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ rectangle.6
8. Attach unit from Step 7 with the remaining 5 1/2″ HST to make the bat’s other wing and lower body.
9. Attach the bat’s top half unit from Step 5 with bat’s lower half from step 8 to complete the assembly.
